چکیده

We studied CO(2) evolution from ring-labeled [2,6-C]parathion (O,O-diethyl-O-p-nitrophenyl phosphorothioate) in the rhizosphere of rice seedlings. The soil samples (nonflooded [60% water-holding capacity] and flooded) were treated first with technical parathion (20 mug/g) and then after 10 days with ring-labeled [C]parathion. In unplanted soil, less than 5.5% of the C in the parathion was evolved as CO(2) in 15 days under both flooded and nonflooded conditions. In soil planted with rice, 9.2% of the radiocarbon was evolved as CO(2) under nonflooded conditions, and 22.6% was evolved under flooded conditions. These results suggest that soil planted with rice permits significant ring cleavage, especially under flooded conditions.

Impact of 15N-labeled rice straw and rice straw compost application on N mineralization and N uptake by rice

Incorporation of plant residues in soil affects N and C content and dynamics. This studydetermined the effects of short-term alternative rice (Oryza sativa L.) residue management on Nmineralization and uptake by rice. Pot and laboratory incubation experiments were established byincorporating 15N-labeled rice straw and rice straw compost in paddy soil. The 15N recovered by riceaveraged 16.6%; mo...

Rice Stink Bug Control in Large-Plot Trials

Eleven large-plot trials were located across nine counties in eastern Arkansas to evaluate the efficacy of select insecticides on the rice stink bug. Lambda-cyhalothrin, zeta-cypermethrin, methyl parathion, and carbaryl achieved initial control. However, only lambda-cyhalothrin and zeta-cypermethrin maintained significantly lower counts of the rice stink bug at 14 days after treatment (DAT). La...

Effects of tree root-derived substrates and inorganic nutrients on pyrene mineralization in rhizosphere and bulk soil.

This study investigated the effects of organic and inorganic nutrients on the microbial degradation of the common soil contaminant pyrene. The material used in this investigation was collected from potted trees that had been growing for over a year in a soil artificially contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Soil was removed from the nonroot (bulk) and root (rhizosphere) zones of ...

Rhizosphere priming effects on soil carbon and nitrogen mineralization

Living roots and their rhizodeposits affect microbial activity and soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) mineralization. This so-called rhizosphere priming effect (RPE) has been increasingly recognized recently. However, the magnitude of the RPE and its driving mechanisms remain elusive. Here we investigated the RPE of two plant species (soybean and sunflower) grown in two soil types (a farm or a pr...

New Insights into How Increases in Fertility Improve the Growth of Rice at the Seedling Stage in Red Soil Regions of Subtropical China

The differences in rhizosphere nitrification activities between high- and low- fertility soils appear to be related to differences in dissolved oxygen concentrations in the soil, implying a relationship to differences in the radial oxygen loss (ROL) of rice roots in these soils. A miniaturised Clark-type oxygen microelectrode system was used to determine rice root ROL and the rhizosphere oxygen...
